Using CICS BAC to change BDAM data set name when CICS is up

Question & Answer

Question

Can I dynamically change the data set name for a BDAM file in a running CICS Transaction Server region using the CICS Batch Application Control for z/OS (CICS BAC) ISPF dialog?

Answer

Answer: Yes. Assuming the BDAM file has not been allocated in the CICS region JCL at startup, but you allow it to be dynamically allocated by CICS TS, then yes, you can follow these steps to modify the BDAM file's dataset name in the running CICS TS region using the ISPF dialog.

You can follow these navigation steps to change the dataset name.

  1. From the entry ISPF panelid CBKPMAIN with title 'CICS BAC Primary Option Menu', choose option 1 'Select a CICS region'.

  2. From the line action command field use the 'S' to select the CICS TS region where you need to change the data set name.

  3. From panelid CBKPRGRM with title ' Region Resources', choose option 1 'VSAM files' (even though this is for BDAM).

  4. From panelid CBKPFILI with title 'VSAM Files on Control File', specify 'S' on the line action command field to the left of the BDAM file you want to modify.

  5. From panelid CBKPFILE with title 'File Properties and Status', choose option '2' 'File state startup options and data set names'.

  6. From panelid CBKPFIFO with title 'File State Startup Options and Data Set Names (ddname)', type the primary and or alternate data set names you want to specify for this BDAM file.

  7. Press the PF3 key twice to save the specification and get back to panelid CBKPFILI 'VSAM Files on Control File'. From the line action field specify a '/' next to the BDAM file to 'Change file state... ' and press the enter key.

  8. From panelid CBKPFIAP with title 'File Action Selection List (ddname)', specify option '2' to close and disable the file in fields 'Open/close actions (OPENSTATUS)' and 'Enable/disable actions (ENABLESTATUS)' and press PF8 to go forward.

  9. On the section with description 'Set data set name to... (DSN)' choose either '1' for 'Primary data set name' or '2' for 'Alternate data set name' and press enter.

  10. You will now be back on panelid CBKPFILI 'VSAM Files on Control File' and should see in the upper right corner the text 'Command(s) processed' and the dataset name should display either the primary or alternate data set name you chose.

  11. Lastly, browse the CBKLOG DD for the CICS TS region where the BDAM file request was sent and you should see messages showing the before and after updates similar to these messages... alt text
