How does one verify that a VTAM session is transmitting encrypted data?

Question & Answer

Question

How does one verify that a VTAM session is transmitting encrypted data?

Answer

To confirm if a VTAM session is encrypted, issue one of the folllowing VTAM commands to show session data with Session Status modifiers:

  • D NET,SESSIONS,PLU=plu_name,LIST=ALL

  • D NET,APPLS,ID=application_program_major_node_name,ACTSESS

  • D NET,ID=application_name,ACTSESS

Then look for the following Session Status modifiers in positions 6 - 8 of the STATUS field of message IST634I/IST635I:

/D Session performing DES encryption.

/T Session performing Triple-DES encryption.

/MT Multinode persistent session uses Triple-DES encryption.

/DI Persistent session recovery is in progress, and the session uses DES encryption.

/DR Persistent session recovery is pending, and the session uses DES encryption.

/PD Primary XRF session using DES encryption.

/PT Primary XRF session using Triple-DES encryption.

/XD Backup XRF session using DES encryption.

/XT Backup XRF session using Triple-DES encryption.
