Question & Answer
Question
Does the PRTCT parameter on the VTAM APPL statement support specifying the password using lower-case characters and special characters?
Answer
You can code the value for PRTCT in lowercase characters, but the lowercase characters are translated into uppercase as soon as the APPL definition statement is read in from the library. You should code the value for PRTCT in uppercase.[] You cannot use special characters in the password. See the description of PASSWD in z/OS Communications Server: SNA Programming (SC31-8829-03), where it states: "Note: The area pointed to by this operand must begin with a 1-byte length field followed by the EBCDIC password (in alphanumeric characters only). This is the password that is specified using the PRTCT operand of the APPL definition statement."
The area pointed to by the PASSWD operand of the ACB macroinstruction and the value for the PRTCT operand of the APPL definition statement must be coded using alphanumeric characters.
