Question & Answer
Question
VARY ACT command processing for a line defined under a GROUP in a z/OS Enterprise Extender (EE) XCA major node, when HOSTNAME was coded on the GROUP statement or was inherited from the HOSTNAME start option, results in messages IST1893I NAME-TO-ADDRESS RESOLUTION FAILED and IST380I with sense code FFC80006
Answer
In the following messages,
IST1893I NAME-TO-ADDRESS RESOLUTION FAILED
IST1910I LOCAL HOSTNAME value
IST314I END
IST380I ERROR FOR ID = nodename - REQUEST: ACTLINK, SENSE: FFC80006
the sense code FFC80006 indicates a getaddrinfo timeout.
The problem might be due to the IPRESOLV parameter being set to an nonzero value on the PORT statement in the EE XCA major node. The default value for IPRESOLV is zero, which means that VTAM will wait indefinitely for name-to-address resolution to occur. If a nonzero value in the valid range of 1 - 255 is specified for IPRESOLV, that means that VTAM will wait the number of seconds specified for name-to-address resolution to occur and then time out. If a nonzero value was specified, that might be too short a time for resolution to occur.
It is recommended to either increase IPRESOLV to an appropriate value, or let it default to zero.
The IPRESOLV keyword has been set to a default value of zero because in most cases it is desirable to establish the amount of time allowed before hostname resolution timeout by using the value in the TCP/IP configuration statements. Reset this value only when a VTAM hostname resolution time limit is required.
