When does a Directory Entry get deleted from VTAM's APPN directory database?

Question & Answer

Question

On our VTAM systems, the DIRTIME start option (the amount of time a dynamic resource remains in the directory database without being used before VTAM deletes it) is set to the default value of 8 days but directory entries are disappearing before the 8 day expiration date. What causes a directory entry to get deleted from VTAM's APPN directory database before the time set by the DIRTIME start option?

Answer

There are a number of reasons why a directory entry can be deleted from the directory database before the DIRTIME value expires.

  1. If the start option DIRSIZE is exceeded, the oldest directory entries are deleted to make room for the new entries.

  2. If VTAM is cycled without checkpointing the Directory Services database, then old information can be loaded when VTAM is brought back up.

  3. If SRCHRED is enabled and SRCOUNT and SRTIMER are invoked for that resource, the directory entry is deleted before the next search is initiated by VTAM for this resource. In this case, any known information that was previously in this entry is lost and a new entry is created. If found information is returned, the DECB is updated with this information. If the resource is not found, then the entry will exist but with no owning information.

To minimize the probability that directory entries will be deleted before the time set by the DIRTIME start option, increase the DIRSIZE start option to allow for more entries in the directory database.
