Question & Answer
Question
When activating a z/OS Enterprise Extender XCA major node, which specifies the HOSTNAME parameter on a GROUP statement instead of the IPADDR parameter, the following messages are issued:
IST097I VARY ACCEPTED
IST1132I nodename IS ACTIVE, TYPE = XCA MAJOR NODE
IST1139I ACTLINK FOR nodename FAILED - SENSE: FFC80003
IST1045I NODE TYPE = LINE
IST314I END
Also, activating an Enterprise Extender switched major node, which specifies the HOSTNAME parameter on a PATH statement instead of the IPADDR parameter, can result in the following messages:
IST590I CONNECTOUT FAILED FOR PU puname ON LINE linename
IST1139I GETHOSTBNM FOR nodename FAILED - SENSE: FFC80003
IST1045I NODE TYPE = PU_T2
IST314I END
Answer
The sense code FFC80003 is set when a gethostbyname call fails. VTAM issues gethostbyname to resolve a host name to an IP address. It therefore needs an OMVS segment. Ensure that the VTAM job name is defined to a userid that has an OMVS segment. As per the IBM Redbooks publication Enterprise Extender Implementation Guide (SG24-7359-00):
"If you plan to use host names in any VTAM definitions, VTAM must have an OMVS segment to be able to resolve host names to IP addresses. Like any other IP application making program calls to the TCP/IP stack, VTAM needs to ask the stack for DNS name resolution when you code a host name instead of an IP address. In order for VTAM to successfully submit a DNS query to the stack, the user ID under which the VTAM address space is running must have authority to do so. That authority is built and given by defining an OMVS segment for VTAM's user ID".
The problem can be bypassed by specifying IPADDR rather than HOSTNAME in the Enterprise Extender switched major node or Enterprise Extender XCA major node.
