Why are FTP messages being translated to uppercase?

Question & Answer

Question

FTP messages are being sent in uppercase.

This is a problem when the message contains variable data that needs to be in mixed case. It is particularly impactful when the inserts are HFS file names. Without knowing the correct case, the files might not be found.

Answer

This is most likely the result of having "UPPER" specified for the MESSAGECASE parameter in the TCPIP.DATA file used by FTPD. This means that any message and tokens within the message sent back to the FTP client will be in uppercase, which can cause problems with FTP clients that process FTP server response messages by interrogating the returned message for specific text in response to a command.

If you use FTP clients sensitive to the mixed case response, ensure either that:

  • MESSAGECASE MIXED is set in TCPIP.DATA ,or

  • There is no MESSAGECASE statement (since MIXED is the default)
