S878 abends during CICS startup after applying PTF for OA45950

Question

After applying the PTF for z/OS APAR OA45950, why am I suddenly receiving many S878 abends when I bring up my CICS regions? No CICS system or application software changes were made.

The PTF numbers for APAR OA45950 for the various MVS releases are:
Release C10 : UA75818 available 15/02/25 (F502 )
Release D10 : UA75819 available 15/02/25 (F502 )
Release 210 : UA75838 available 15/02/25 (F502 )

Answer

The problem is with the original MVS fix for OA45950. This APAR fix is in error, and causes a 1 Meg loss of below-the-line private area storage. The error is documented by APAR OA47275. To correct the 1 Meg loss which should eliminate the S878 abends, you must apply the PTF for your release of z/OS:

PTF List:
Release C10 : UA76641 available 15/04/08 (1000 )
Release D10 : UA76642 available 15/04/08 (1000 )
Release 210 : UA76643 available 15/04/08 (1000 )

As a temporary workaround for a CICS region, you may be able to bring the regions up by lowering the DSALIM parameter by 1 Meg.
