Why does VTAM issue a IST1889I message, and what actions can I take when I get the message?

Question & Answer

Question

What actions can I take when I get the message IST1889I?

Answer

The IST1889I message is issued due to a held or missing pacing response. To determine what happened with the pacing response: - Issue a VTAM CSDUMP command with the parameter of MESSAGE=IST1889I.
This will gather a dump if this were to occur again. Do this on
all hosts that have CDRM sessions with the SSCP identified in the IST1889I message.

  • Increase the VTAM Internal Trace size to 999 using the MODIFY TRACE
    command.

  • Send doc to Comm Server Level Two support for debug

  • Monitor the systems to look for the IST1889I message; and when you
    see the message; issue a VTAM VARY INACT command on the CDRM with:
    ID=xxxxxxxx,TYPE=FORCE,IDTYPE=SSCP,SAVESESS
    This will take down the CDRM session and free up the associated private storage,
    and clear up the pacing problem. Note: You will typically see VTAM Private Storage shortage messages along with the IST1889I.

  • Issue the VARY ACT command to bring the CDRM session back active.

  • If you have an PPO application such as Netview; you could automate
    on the IST1889I message and when it is issued, you can have the
    PPO application automatically inactivate the CDRM session.
