Determining EXCI pipe usage when using a WAS - CICS TG - CICS TS configuration

Question & Answer

Question

Is there a way to determine the actual EXCI pipe usage as this is not included in the CICS Transaction Gateway (CICS TG) statistics numbers? I am using CICS TG between a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) and a CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) region.

Answer

For a CICS Transaction Gateway local mode connection between a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) and a CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) region, the best way to determine the number of EXCI PIPE that a WAS address space has is to take a system dump (SDUMP) of the WAS address space and format the dump with this IPCS command:

VERBX DFHPDxxx 'KE=3'

where xxx is your release level of CICS like 680 for CICS TS 5.1, 690 for CICS TS 5.2, and 700 for CICS TS 5.3.

KE=3 will format all the external CICS interface control blocks which include The PIPE. To find the number in use you just have search on the keyword "PIPE" and count them.
