DFHSR0606 S878 AKEB short on MVS z/OS Storage in TOR

Question & Answer

Question

Why do I get message DFHSR0606 Abend s878 AKEB short on MVS z/OS Storage in my CICS terminal owning region (TOR) region? I am using ASG Software Solutions product ASG-TMON for CICS.

This is the message I see in my TOR:

DFHSR0606 Abend (code 878/AKEB) has been detected.

I've looked at the CICS traffic volume right before the crash and am seeing nothing. There are no spikes in traffic and no slowdowns. The region typically uses less than half of the defined DSA or EDSA. The in-flight work at the time of the crash seems normal and well within the DSA and EDSA limits.

Answer

ASG Software Solutions provided PTF fix TH03807 for the ASG-TMON product suite for this problem.

Abend S878 has to do with how much storage is available outside of CICS DSA and EDSA. To verify that fix TH03807 will resolve your problem, you'll need to take a look at the system dump of the abend. To see storage from an MVS point of view, you can use the following IPCS command:

VERBX VSMDATA 'NOG,SUMM'

At the bottom of the output you should see:

     LOCAL SUBPOOL USAGE SUMMARY

CICS uses subpools 251 and 252 for the DSAs. So, these subpools are going to be big. The largest storage besides these is subpool 132 in key 8:

TCB/OWNER SP# KEY BELOW ABOVE TOTAL
       --------- --- --- ----- ----- -----
        xxxxxx 132 8 12B000 3CF45000 3D070000

Subpool 132 Key 8 data is included in the detailed information that VSMDATA provides earlier in the output. This is filled with DQEs that represent pages of storage. For example:

       DQE: Addr ######## Size 1000 TCB: 00xxxxxx SP/K: 132/ 8 ebkpoaaa

There are many iterations of the same data at that address. The data starts with the same type information in the eye catcher, including:
