Which HDFS user should I use in BigInsights 4.0 Quick Start Edition, once I have logged in to the VM as virtuser?

Question by albertvillanova  (1) | Dec 22, 2015 at 07:34 AM hadoopbiginsightshdfs

I have downloaded the VMWare image of BigInsights Quick Start Edition VM, version 4.0.0.1, as described in the course of Big Data University (note that the instructions in this course are for version 4.0 and not for 4.1).

However, the Linux user virtuser has no user account in HDFS, and thus I cannot create any dir in HDFS because of a lack of permissions.

How could I fix this?

By default, HDFS is owned by user "hdfs". You will need hdfs to add directories or change permissions. ex. su - hdfs -c "hadoop dfs -mkdir /sandbox"

Also, you can always login as root. Password is "password".
