In a VTAM APPN network, what is the route resistance?

Question & Answer

Question

Explain the concept of route resistance in a VTAM APPN network.

Answer

Route resistance is the desirability of a network node for intermediate routing.

It is a user-defined value specified on either the start command or in the start list of a network node.

The ROUTERES start option is used to specify a route addition resistance value. This is a relative measure of the desirability for this node to perform intermediate session routing function. The value specified for this node is compared to the values of other network nodes during route calculation. The lower the value, the more desirable it is to have this node provide intermediate session routing.

You can change the value of ROUTERES with the MODIFY VTAMOPTS command while VTAM is running.

Possible values for ROUTERES are 0-255. The default value for ROUTERES is 128.

The operator of a VTAM node can display the route resistance of a specified node in the APPN network by issuing any of these commands:

  • DISPLAY NET, TOPO,ID=cpname command used to display the route resistance value of all network nodes named on the ID parameter (including wildcard values)

  • DISPLAY NET, TOPO,ID=cpname,LIST=ADJ command used to display the route resistance value of all network nodes adjacent to the specified cpname (including wildcard values)

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,ID=cpname,LIST=ICN command used to display the route resistance value of all interchange nodes named on the ID parameter (including wildcard values)

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,ID=cpname,LIST=ALL command when it is issued at a network node (including wildcard values)

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,ID=cpname,LIST=ALL command when it is issued at an end node and the ID specified is not the local end node (including wildcard values)

In addition, the operator of a VTAM node can issue:

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,LIST=ICN command to display the resistance value of all interchange nodes in the network

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,LIST=NN command to display the resistance value of all network nodes in the network

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,LIST=BN command to display the resistance value of all border nodes in the network

  • DISPLAY NET,TOPO,LIST=CDSERVR command to display the resistance value of all central directory servers in the network
