Starting syslogd generates ICH408I message

Question & Answer

Question

When starting syslogd, we get RACF message ICH408I. Is there something in our syslogd configuration that needs correction?

Answer

Syslogd will try to run nonswappable when it starts:

  • If syslogd has Read access to BPX.STOR.SWAP, message FSUM1232 syslogd: running non-swappable will be issued and syslogd will run nonswappable.

  • If syslogd does not have Read access to BPX.STOR.SWAP, ICH408I will be issued by RACF. Syslogd will issue message FSUM1233 syslogd: running swappable and run swappable.

You need to determine whether syslogd should run swappable or nonswappable in your environment. Set the access authority to BPX.STOR.SWAP. If syslogd is to run swappable, then ICH408I for facility BPX.STOR.SWAP can be ignored.
