DFHSJ0210 JVMPROFILE_ERROR when starting JVM after upgrading to z/OS 2.1

Question & Answer

Question

Why am I receiving DFHSJ0210 with reason code JVMPROFILE_ERROR and DFHSJ0914 when I attempt to start a JVM within CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) after upgrading from z/OS V1.13 to z/OS V2.1? I am not aware of any changes that were made to CICS.

I am receiving the following error messages:

DFHSJ0210 date time applid An attempt to start a JVM for the JVMSERVER resource jvmserver has failed. Reason code: JVMPROFILE_ERROR
DFHSJ0914 E date time applid userid JVMSERVER jvmserver is installed as DISABLED because the Language Environment Enclave was not created

.

Answer

Your JAVA_HOME shows /usr/lpp/java/J7.1_64 indicating that you are running with Java V7.1. So, in the process of upgrading to z/OS V2.1, you must have also switched your version of Java from V7 to V7.1. You are receiving DFHSJ0210 with reason code JVMPROFILE_ERROR because base CICS TS V5.1 and TS V5.2 do not support IBM Java SE V7.1. This is documented as follows in the Detailed System Requirements for CICS Transaction Server for CICS TS V5.1 and V5.2 under "Supported Software > Java SDK":

For V7.1 support APAR PI30532 needs to be applied. For V8, support APAR PI52819 needs to be applied.

Alternatively, you can revert back to Java V7.0.
