Why is the GATEWAY statement getting an error after z/OS upgrade?

Question & Answer

Question

The system is being upgraded to z/OS 2.2. When IPLed, the TCPIP started task gets the following message:

EZZ0318I GATEWAY WAS FOUND ON LINE 101 AND IP ADDRESS OR NEXT STATEMENT WAS EXPECTED

Attempts to connect to this system (such as a TN3270 session) fail.

Answer

One of the required migration actions for upgrading to z/OS 2.2 is to convert the GATEWAY statement to a BEGINROUTES block. This message is a result of not having done that (the line number and expected values reported will vary depending on the previous statement being processed).
