Updating ISM Signon panel to add text to header lines

Question & Answer

Question

How can I add 4 additional lines of text to the IBM Session Manager for z/OS (ISM) sign-on panel? I am using a classic configuration. I am not familiar with the product.

Answer

It is recommended that you not modify anything above the product description line within the textstart or textend areas as some users might have their own 3270 emulator macros that check for existing text on the signon panel to perform a macro signon. If you just add your warning text below the existing t_pgmname variable, most 3270 emulator macros should probably continue to work just fine. It is always a risk to modify the text on the initial product signon screen as you never know what end users might have recorded in using their 3270 emulator product to auto signon.

I will assume the signon panel is based on either the SIGNON or SIGNONE panel in member ISZLENPU in the SISZCONF data set. Those panels specify a "call iszhead" (which inserts 2 lines at the top) and a header statement "HEADER LINES 16" a "nline" and TRAILER LINES 7 that is a total of 24 lines that will fit on a 24x80 screensize.

If you look at the number of lines between the "textstart" and "textend" statements it should be 11 lines, so the 2 lines from the iszhead plus the 11 lines of text is 13 lines. This leaves you 3 spare lines to insert, but I would recommend utilizing the existing lines of whitespace below the t_pgmname variable for your text as in the examples below.

Let me know if this helps and if you can successfully display the panel after a UPDATE (using classic config) or PUPDATE (using OLA config).

You can read about the UPDATE command in the IBM Session Manager Technical Reference document id SC34-2805-00 beginning on page 271 in Chapter 29 Commands in topic 'Privileged user commands'.

Note: Your USER statement in the CONFIG DD in member ISZUSER needs to have AUTH 9 set as the privilege to issue the UPDATE command in a classic environment.

You can read more about topic 'Designing the signon panel' in CHAPTER 9 Defining security and implementing dynamic menus - Defining security beginning on page 292 in the Session Manager V3.2 Installation and Customization document id GC34-2804-00.
