Question & Answer
Question
Why am I receiving many GIM23911E messages when applying maintenance to our CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) V4.2 system using SMP/E? The APPLY CHECK got a return code of 0.
I received the following errors from the APPLY:
UK97499 JCI670D GIM69168E 5 HFSCOPY PROCESSING FAILED FOR HFS DFJ@H223 CODE WAS 12. THE SEQUENCE NUMBER WAS 000033
...
IEW2456E 9207 SYMBOL DFHTCBR UNRESOLVED. MEMBER COULD NOT BE INCLUDED.
IEW2470E 9511 ORDERED SECTION IPRXMXE NOT FOUND IN MODULE.
It appears as though one of the major causer's is the inability to process an HFSCOPY. I checked the DDDEF for SDHH001 and it appears to be fine and is mounted to the correct path.
I also see the following message in my APPLY job:
BPXF151I BPXCOPY WAS INVOKED FOR HEAD ID 000033.
BPXF150I MVS DATA SET WITH DDNAME SYSUT1 SUCCESSFULLY COPIED INTO
BINARY HFS FILE /usr/lpp/cicsts/cicsts4m/IBM/DFJ@H223.
BPXF156E RETURN CODE 0000008B, REASON CODE EF07603D. PATHMODE COULD
NOT BE SET FOR FILE /usr/lpp/cicsts/cicsts4m/IBM/DFJ@H223.
Answer
BPXF156E RETURN CODE 0000008B REASON CODE EF07603D can be broken down as follows:
Return code (errnos) Hex 008B is described as EPERM - The operation is not permitted.
EFxxrrrr Reason code EF07 603D can be further broken down to Reason code 603D which is described as a SAF chgmode error with Action: Ensure that you are authorized to change the permissions.
You either need to be UID 0 (supervisor) to run an SMP/E APPLY that installs into a file system (as in this case) or you need to have READ access to the profile BPX.SUPERUSER in the FACILITY class. See Superusers in z/OS UNIX for more information.
