Question & Answer
Question
I am trying to packet trace SMC-R connections on z/OS Comm Server version 2.2 (v2r2). I am
starting the packet trace using V TCPIP,,PKTTRACE command, and then
taking SVC dump of TCPIP, and inputting that into IPCS. I use options 2.7.1 to
get to the trace, and I see all the packets, except I get this message
for the SMC packets:
PTRPT01I 38 Ctrace record incorrect. Bad PTH extension.
Answer
First ensure that you are using the IBM TCP/IP packet trace format-er code. We have seen where customer run with OEM packet trace format routines and they encounter errors like this. The IBM packet trace format-er has been tested and works well with SMC-R data.
To verify if you are using the IBM packet trace utility, first take a dump of TCP/IP when running the packet trace.
In the dump, issue the following command: ip tcpipcs mtable
In the mtable output, do a find on : EZBTIINI
Copy the storage address listed just to the left of the name EZBTIINI, and go to this address in the dump.
This will put you at the start of the mtable data which lists TCP/IP module names and their starting addresses.
Do a find on the name of the TCP/IP packet trace processing module which is: EZBPTTRC
Note the address of EZBPTTRC and go to this address in the dump. the information in the eye-catcher at this location should be all about EZBPTTRC and IBM TCP/IP information, if you see anything different or OEM data,
this is probably your problem. Verify with the OEM vendor that you are running the latest level of code that supports SMC-R data. Also check for overlays in this area of storage...
