Configuration Assistant cannot write the newly created configuration to an existing MVS data set

Question & Answer

Question

The Configuration Assistant log shows the following messages:

 NewFtpPopupHandler(actionPerformed) ==> User ID: xxxxxxxx ==> EJB Error:
 FILE_WRITE_PDS_RESTRICTED
 Thu Nov 22 12:39:09 GMT 2012 SEVERE (131) CAUtil(logException) ==> User
 ID: xxxxxxx ==> Exception encountered, stack dump =
 javax.ejb.EJBException: FILE_WRITE_PDS_RESTRICTED

The only thing that does not work within z/OSMF is to output policies by using 'write to z/OS DASD'.
We can write into the MVS data set by using FTP instead of using direct writing into DASD.

Answer

The FILE_WRITE_PDS_RESTRICTED exception record indicates that the user does not have the authority to write to that PDS.

Verify that the specified user has authority to access the destination data set:

  • Has this same user written to this data set before?

  • Can the user write to the specified data set if logged on locally to the system you are attempting to FTP to?

  • Have there been any recent system changes that could have affected this user's privileges?

Ensure that no users or processes are browsing or editing either the member list or a specific member of the PDS in which you are intending to write the policy file. You must ensure that the data set is closed and not being edited or browsed to save to disk.
