Question
There are multiple VTAM LPARs in a sysplex.
When the first VTAM in the sysplex is initialized, the following messages are displayed on that VTAM:
IST2158I VTAM HAS JOINED THE SYSPLEX GROUP groupname
IST1798I TOPOLOGY DATASET RETRIEVED WAS CREATED ON date time
But when the remaining VTAMs in the sysplex are later initialized, IST1798I is not displayed on those other VTAM hosts, and the following error messages are displayed:
IST2158I VTAM HAS JOINED THE SYSPLEX GROUP groupname
IST1288I TOPOLOGY DATASET RETRIEVAL WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL, CODE = 11
Answer
VTAM issues message IST1288I when topology data from a previously saved data set could not be read successfully. This message is issued primarily for information and does not indicate a loss of processing ability.
Code 11 indicates that the topology and routing services data set was found, but the data set was ignored because there was a name conflict.
This code indicates that the data set cannot be used because it was saved under a different control point name. VTAM will not read the data set, but will write to it. The next time a MODIFY CHKPT command is entered, the old data set will be replaced with the new one.
If all the VTAMs in the sysplex share the same SYS1.TRSDB database, that configuration is invalid. The same SYS1.TRSDB data set cannot be shared among multiple NETs (VTAM procs) running on multiple LPARs. That is why the first VTAM successfully read the topology checkpoint database but the other VTAMs in the sysplex did not.
Each VTAM must have its own unique topology checkpoint database (TRSDB). You must create a unique topology checkpoint database for each VTAM host, and name them according to the host. You can use MVS system symbols to do the naming, as shown below:
TRSDB DD DISP=SHR,DSN=SYS1.&SYSNAME..TRSDB
