Question & Answer
Question
If a CICS region owns a CA Common Services ENQUEUE (CAHCHECK) that a number of other regions are waiting on, could this cause CICS to hang during shutdown? I see the CAHCHECK ENQUEUE in the information about the the region (dump and performance data) at the time when the CICS region is hanging.
I tried to shut the CICS region down with using normal conventions and the CICS region would not come down. I was able to bring the region down using the FORCE command.
I am using CICS Transaction Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) V5.2 and the CA Health Checker common service.
Answer
The ENQUEUE for CAHCHECK that is causing the CICS region to hang at shutdown is due to a timing problem in CA Common services. CA PTF number RO38311 should fix this problem. CA Technologies provided the following description:
The CA Health Checker has an end-of-task and end-of-memory resource manager. The end-of-task resource manager obtains an ENQ to serialize access to data structures. If a FORCE command is used on an address space before a DEQ of a CA HC resource, the end-of-memory resource manager hangs as it also tries to obtain the ENQ.
The CA Health Checker ENQ resource that will most likely be involved is:
QNAME=CAHCHECK RNAME=HRQPBLK_SYSTEM_REQUEST_QUEUE
Product Synonym
CICS/TS CICSTS CICS TS CICS Transaction Server
