LPSERVE is repeatedly failing with an EZB0622E message

Question & Answer

Question

LPSERVE (LPD) is running on z/OS servicing a large number of client systems issuing multiple requests (LPR command). The server with an EZB0622E Open as server failed (Too many open connections already exist (8561)) message. Operations has to continually restart it.

Answer

The LPSERVE code is limited to 255 simultaneous connections. The EZB0622E message is issued when the 256th client arrives. Starting multiple copies of the server, each specifying a unique LPDPRFX value and referencing the same LPDDATA input, will allow higher volumes of client connections to be handled. This can be done by having an instance of LPSERVE running on multiple LPARs in the sysplex and defining a sysplex distributor (VIPADISTRIBUTE) for that port (515). Be sure to specify a non-zero TIMEDAFFINITY value on this statement.
