Question & Answer
Question
Can you tell me what might cause sys code 878 (S878) abends in IBM Session Manager for z/OS (ISM) and provide any suggestions as to what I can do to monitor ISM storage usage? My ISM V3.200B address space typically has between 3000 and 3700 users signed on. ISM is configured with STORLIM of 1500M and MAXSTOR is set to YES. I cannot identify any recent changes to the configuration, but recently started to experience multiple abendS878 in the ISM region.
If I go back through the ISM joblog I do see some GFS storage messages:
ISZ0573E GFS CRITICAL threshold passed
ISZ0574I GFS CRITICAL threshold relieved
ISZ0573E GFS CRITICAL threshold passed
The started task shows message:
IEA794I SVC DUMP HAS CAPTURED:
DUMPID=003 REQUESTED BY JOB (ISZCSTRT)
DUMP TITLE=ERROR DURING SYMPTOM DUMP
IEA705I ERROR DURING GETMAIN SYS CODE = 878-10 ISZCSTRT ISZCSTRT 00

Answer
You can use the following commands to view your IBM Session Manager for z/OS storage:
GFS STOR
GFS USAGE
GFS STATS
You can enter these GFS commands from the command line or select the "GFS" option from the integrated 'System Management Menu' application. Once in GFS Usage panel, you need to ensurethe "% free" column does not have any submap rows with less than 50% free storage available. You can also use the PF10 and PF11 keys to view storage statistics and storage....
PF10 will display statistics:
PF11 will display storage:
In this instance, investigation of the 878 dump revealed the E22 dynamic menu exit was in use and that specifying DYNMDROPSESSION as YES on the SYSTEM SECURITY statement can significantly reduce storage usage.
See the IBM Session Manager for z/OS Version 3 Release 2 Implementation and Customization Guide GC34-2804-00 in CHAPTER 9 - Defining security and implementing dynamic menus beginning on page 308 under Storage use and performance for more information.
See the IBM Session Manager for z/OS Version 3 Release 2 Technical Reference SC34-2805-00 in CHAPTER 7 SYSTEM statement - Syntax and parameters for additional information on specifying the DYNMDROPSESSION parameter.
