ISM Default profile DEFPROFILE selected after restarting Session Manager

Question & Answer

Question

After IBM Session Manager for z/OS (ISM) is shutdown and restarted, what would cause a users main menu to revert back to all the default sessions from the default system profile DEFPROFILE instead of the one associated with their userid?

I am running ISM V3.2. I recently updated a specific USER entry to use a specific PROFILE and entered the PUPDATE commands to activate the change and confirmed when the USER signed on that they picked up the new PROFILE specified in their updated USER entry. This worked as expected and the user saw all their sessions when they logged on up until an IPL was done.

Answer

Two members that specified the same userid value were located in the ISM USER PDSE data set. For example, the USER PDSE member that was used by the PUPDATE before the IPL and recycle, was named "USPRM01" and the contents of the PDSE USER member contained a 2 lines as follows:

 USER USRPRM01
  PROF PRACPROD

Another PDSE member was also located in the USER PDSE data set with member name "USALT01" and this member contained 2 lines as follows:

 USER USRPRM01
   PROF PRODPROF

The ISM Online Administration does not allow the creation of duplicate USER PDSE members, so the USRALT01 member was most likely created by a manual copy or edit and that member specified the same userid value as the OLA created member. Since the USRALT01 member was processed first after the IPL and restart of ISM, it picked up the PRODPROF profile which was defined as the SYSTEM DEFPROFILE.

Removing the duplicate member from the USER PDSE resolved the problem of the ISM default profile being selected after ISM is restarted.

You should not manually access or edit, copy, or in any way modify the ISM configuration PDSEs, if you are using Online Administration (OLA). All updates should be performed using the OLA application or batch administration utility.
