BPXP015I and BPXP014I when starting z/OS Connect EE server with the Liberty Angel process

Question & Answer

Question

Why am I getting BPXP015I and BPXP014I messages when starting z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (EE) server with the Liberty Angel process?

I am getting the following messages on my z/OS Connect EE server:

BPXP015I HFS PROGRAM /bin/chmod IS NOT MARKED PROGRAM CONTROLLED.
BPXP014I ENVIRONMENT MUST BE CONTROLLED FOR DAEMON (BPX.DAEMON) PROCESSING.

Answer

If you are using the Angel process for authorizing multiple Liberty (or applications that embed) servers, make sure to configure RACF profiles appropriately for all servers, below is an example that created an problem for z/OS Connect EE server:

While installing zosmf on a sysplex with a common RACF db and another LPAR running zosconnect, I ran a job with security definitions that are more restrictive than already available for z/OS Connect EE.

/ Define the SERVER profiles for the z/OSMF server /
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.SECPFX.IZUDFLT UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.ANGEL UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZSAFM UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZSAFM.SAFCRED UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZSAFM.ZOSWLM UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZSAFM.TXRRS UACC(NONE)
RDEFINE SERVER BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZSAFM.ZOSDUMP UACC(NONE)

While I already had customized the following for z/OS Connect EE server on our development environment: BBG.AUTHMOD.BBGZ*.** with UACC(READ)

More restrictive defs disallowed any authorized programs to run since they did not have necessary PERMITs. Once I deleted the RACF DEF’s and kept the more generic entry the server started successfully.
