How can I determine if a CPSVRMGR pipe is hung, and what can be done to get it out of that state?

Question & Answer

Question

In the process of utilizing the Dependent LU Server (DLUS) function of VTAM, it appears that a CPSVRMGR pipe (a contention-winner (conwinner) session and a contention-loser (conloser) session between the DLUS host and the Dependent LU Requester (DLUR) node) is getting hung in a state where the pipe is neither completely active nor completely inactive. How do I confirm that the CPSVRMGR pipe is hung, and how do I get the pipe out of this state?

Answer

If you suspect that a CPSVRMGR pipe is hung, enter at the DLUS host a small number of DISPLAY NET,DLURS commands, allowing short intervals between. If, for a given DLUR, the DLUS CONWINNER STATE and DLUS CONLOSER STATE shown in the display (see the IST1352I message group) continue, through several displays, to show either of the following:

  • DLUS CONWINNER STATE and DLUS CONLOSER STATE are not both ACTIVE

  • DLUS CONWINNER STATE and DLUS CONLOSER STATE are not both INACTIVE

then the CPSVRMGR pipe is hung. In other words, the pipe is neither completely active nor completely inactive.

To inactivate the hung CPSVRMGR pipe, issue the VARY NET,INACT,FORCE,ID= command, specifying either the DLUS-served PU(s) or the DLUR itself.
