Why does an application that is active on another VTAM show up as unavailable on my session manager on this VTAM?

Question & Answer

Question

I have a session manager on VTAM with several cross domain applications listed. Most of the applications are available except for a few. Looking at these applications on the other VTAMs they are active. So why are they showing up unavailable on my session manager menu?

Answer

The session manager is issuing an Inquire Appstat for each application defined to the menu. This will cause VTAM to send a DSRLST to other VTAMs in the network if the Application is not defined on this VTAM. The DSRLST returns status of the Application and post back to the Session Manager. On this VTAM where the session manager is active there are also Application Model definitions coded. In particular there is a model appl definition with an ACBNAME of TSO*. Also on this Model definition MODSRCH is coded to FIRST. The cross domain application that are showing up as unavailable are TSOA, TSOB, TSOC. When the menu issues an Inquire for any of these names it matches the model TSO*. VTAM finds this first and since it is not active in this VTAM the network is not searched and the INQUIRE is posted as unavailable. To resolve this either code MODSRCH=LAST or NEVER. Or change the naming convention so the TSO names do not match the model definition on this VTAM.
