Question

What reasons would cause my CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) region to get message:

DFHEX0002 A severe error (code X'0606') has occurred in module DFHXCPRH

Answer

Topic EXCI call response code values and Response and reason codes returned on EXCI calls can be found in the CICS TS documentation.

If the request is retried, instead of Response Code 8 (Retryable) you get a Response 88 (LINKERR) which is documented in topic Retries on an EXEC CICS LINK command.

If you look up the RESP2 606 (X'0606') under Reason codes for response: SYSTEM_ERROR this is documented as follows:

606: SSI_VERIFY_FAILED
A VERIFY call to the MVS™ subsystem interface (SSI) to obtain the current CICS® SVC number failed.

This error leads to user abend 405. The external CICS interface module DFHXCPRH issued an IEFSSREQ SSI verify request to MVS and the VERIFY request failed. The VERIFY request to MVS is done to determine the number of the CICS SVC type 3 SVC to use.

When the SSI verify request fails to obtain CICS SVC instruction this usually means that the CICS region is not set up to communicate with the MRO (IRC) process. If you look at the region, does it show MRO as OPEN? You can check this by using command CEMT INQUIRE IRC in your region.

If the MRO connection is open, then look at how CICS SVC numbers are defined to MVS. See Installing the CICS SVCs in the CICS TS documentation for more information.
