Question & Answer
Question
Why am I randomly getting message CCSR010E with abend S878 and a dump in my CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) region when running CA ACF2 from CA Technologies? CA ACF2 issues the message which can also be seen in the dump title:
Dump Title: CCSR010E SAFOERPW S878 at 2375C326 LMOD ACFOEGCT CSECT ACFOEGCT +0000DE CTORP2 N/A CTORP2
Looking at the SUMM FORMAT in the system dump of the CICS region, I can see that there are various TCB's with 84878000 completion codes, indicating that an 878 abend has occurred. When I enter IP SYSTTRACE to display the system trace, it shows that the 878's are happening on Storage Obtains, when the program tries to obtain x'FCA8' of Subpool 0 storage. The PSW address on the PC (associated with the Storage Obtain) points within ACFOEGCT (RO92884), which is also in the dump title.

Answer
CA ACF2 Support took a look at the problem and created RO99035 to fix the problem:
"I reviewed your S878 dump and found a problem in ACFOEGCT. The failing GETMAIN request was at:
ASID(X'016A') 2375C326. ACFOEGCT+DE IN EXTENDED CSA
ACFOEGCT is attempting a STORAGE OBTAIN for size X'FCA4' below the bar storage. There isn't a large enough block below the bar to satisfy that request. ACFOEGCT supports a number of different ACF2 functions including password evaluation for the R_password service. Most of the functions it supports do NOT require work area storage of size x'FCA4'. I am going to open an ACF2 problem against ACFOEGCT to optimize the storage handling so that it acquires a much smaller work area when password evaluations are done (i.e. it will be roughly one quarter of the current size). I believe the STORAGE OBTAIN can also be modified to specify LOC=ANY instead of LOC=BELOW so that will also help significantly with regards to ACFOEGCT storage handling."
