When I try to edit a large data set, I get a message that says "Browse substituted." How can I get around that?

Question & Answer

Question

When I try to use ISPF edit on some large data sets I get message ISREV000, "Browse was substituted for View or Edit, since not enough storage was available." Why do I get this error message? Is there any way I can get around this error?

Answer

ISPF Edit reads the entire file in to storage. At some point you would hit a limit based on available storage.
When you log in make sure you specify the largest available region size. Also exit all screens but 1 so that no split screens are in effect. This will minimize the storage in use. Edit will automatically switch to Browse when it runs out of available storage. So if you still cant Edit after doing all this then you have basically hit a limit based on the available storage.
