Happy API Year!

It’s that time of year when we look back at the year that has passed and ahead to what will come. As I think back over 2016 it was one of my most exciting years in my 35 year career at IBM. The interest around the world in all continents (okay, I did not go to Antarctica) and in all industries was incredible. I met hundreds of people in roles from C-level executives to developers who all wanted to discuss what is going on in the API Economy. What were the most common questions I was asked? …  Continue reading Happy API Year!

Identifying API Use Cases in Automotive – White paper available

The next paper in the industry use case series is now available and focuses on the Automotive industry. One of the most common discussions I have with any business is about API use cases related to industry specific scenarios – their scenarios. We are making the information shared in these discussions more accessible to everyone by publishing a series of industry specific white papers covering these and related topics.   Continue reading Identifying API Use Cases in Automotive – White paper available

Internet of Things APIs – Focus on Security

A man walks up to a car, but doesn’t have the keys to the car. Not a problem. He takes out his mobile phone and clicks on an App that he wrote which invokes device APIs to unlock the car. Then he clicks on another function in the App to start the car and drives away. Does this sound like a convenience you would like? Well, I forgot to mention one important thing – the man does not own the car.  Continue reading Internet of Things APIs – Focus on Security

Disrupting the API Economy at Interconnect 2016

A recent IDC FutureScape report with predictions for the Telecommunication Industry for 2016 that I read had all 10 predictions related to the as-a-service economy. It addressed the continuous effect of mobile, challenges for Cloud Service Providers with regard to regulations, security, and competition; consumption of services to accelerate the Digital Transformation of the enterprise, and the challenges to procure such services from a self-serve to a managed model. Many of these predictions are not new, or at least should not catch anyone by surprise; however, the observation that called my attention the most was that each one of the 10 predictions relies on a programmability aspect to realize itself, with web APIs as the underlying mechanism to make it happen.  Continue reading Disrupting the API Economy at Interconnect 2016

The Next Step – Connecting in the API economy

When most organizations talk about the API economy, they start with the API itself. They ask the question, “How do I find APIs?” or “How do I manage, publish, and deploy them?” These are all great questions, of course, but it isn’t where one should start. The key to a successful API economy strategy begins with identifying the differentiating functions within your organization that you can take to market. It’s that simple.  Continue reading The Next Step – Connecting in the API economy

Weather predictions, APIs, IoT, and a powerful digital platform for your uninterrupted Business

IBM has started a fundamental shift a few years ago, transforming itself from a big IT and mainframe provider to a digital, data and insight company. The main focus has shifted towards cognitive computing, analytics, IoT, APIs, hybrid cloud and digital platforms that support big corporations to reinvent themselves and engage in the digital economy. Values for business come from providing data, and, more importantly, predictable results along with actionable intelligence. When placing bets for your enterprise digital transformation, you need an organization that can provide a transformative solution to take you into the future, not just a platform that can barely solve your current problems. Read this article to find out more about where your organization is in its IOT/API economy journey by taking the IBM API Economy Self-Assessment.   Continue reading Weather predictions, APIs, IoT, and a powerful digital platform for your uninterrupted Business

Digital Transformation next step with Data and APIs in the API economy

Insights and APIs dominated Las Vegas this week, well at least the part of Las Vegas centered on the IBM Insight 2015 event. The excitement in our customers and partners around the significant disruption IBM is driving in the market place through the Insight and API Economies is palpable as I sit in the Expo center.  Continue reading Digital Transformation next step with Data and APIs in the API economy

Want to practice capitalism?

We are at an age – the Digital Age – where the sophistication of mankind and the thinking that separates us from the other living creatures is truly taking shape. In this digital economy stage, we are trying to establish self-serving, borderless, universal trade practices that can be entirely defined, established, conducted, consumed, and paid using digital methods. This is where we are starting to establish legacies. Your growth will only come by engaging in digital economy, and by making your assets available for consumers to use what they need, when they need it, at the right time and for the right price. I see huge gap between the IT departments (or the digital producers) and the digital consumers in discovery, exposure, frictionless integration, self-service, and monetization.   Continue reading Want to practice capitalism?
