Creating web apps to integrate with IBM Maximo Asset Management

Web apps provide a way to deliver solutions that run in a web browser, such as Google Chrome, and can therefore run on multiple devices, including phones, tablets and the desktop. Try out our Google Polymer sample to see how to use a popular web app framework to integrate with IBM® Maximo® Asset Management. This guide is for developers interested in learning more about developing web apps that integrate with Maximo Asset Management. Web apps, in this sense are not hosted with Maximo Asset Management, but rather they are hosted external to your Maximo environment and communicate with your Maximo server.

Polymer is an open-source project for building progressive web applications that are reliable, fast and engaging. Polymer can be used to create responsive web apps that work on browsers for various devices, including desktop, tablets and mobile. According to the Polymer Project, “Developers deserve a platform they can work with, not around–one that makes it easy to build, deliver and maintain universally accessible, reliable, delightful and high-performing apps.” Developers can use Polymer to integrate with Maximo Asset Management.

Prerequisites

  • Basic familiarity of Maximo Asset Management.
  • A Maximo V7.6 client. (If you do not have a license, and you are an IBM Business Partner®, you can get a license using the IBM Software Access Catalog.)
  • To use the Polymer sample, you will need Google Polymer V2.0 or higher and an available instance of Maximo Asset Management V7.6 or higher.

Developing web apps to integrate with Maximo Asset Management

The basics

If you are an organization that needs a highly customized workflow, or you want to know how to use Maximo Asset Management to query information that you might integrate with another dashboard, then the Polymer sample app shows you how to use Representational State Transfer (REST) application programming interfaces (APIs) to get the information you want out of Maximo Asset Management.

The Polymer sample app is designed so your team can write solutions that integrate with Maximo Asset Management more quickly. Developers can see how to use Maximo APIs with Polymer that can show and edit a list of work orders.

The steps

  • Log in using Maximo credentials.
  • View a list of work orders presented in a paged list.
  • Update work order details.
  • Create a new work order.

Using REST APIs

Maximo REST APIs provide a way for external applications to query and update application data in Maximo Asset Management. They expose business objects and integration object structures as REST resources.
