Because of the failed rains in 2016 and 2017, more than 3.1 million people in East Africa are facing severe food insecurity. Over 388,000 children under the age of five are at risk of dying from a lethal combination of severe malnourishment and deadly diseases. More than a million people have been displaced and many of them have ended up in internally displaced person (IDP) camps around cities and towns. Many of these camps are difficult to reach because of distance, conflict, or political barriers.
Non-profit organizations such as Oxfam are working in the most affected areas providing support in the areas of food security, water, sanitation, and protection. Innovative scalable mobile-based technology solutions can play an important role in the current response, but they require high security and scalability. Applications deployed in these affected areas need to be reliable and trusted, and should scale and perform as the situations demand.
To build mobile-based apps that utilize innovative back-ends to address natural disasters such as drought, developers should use open, cutting-edge hardware and software that provides the highest levels of security. Open source is now the dominant method for creating cloud-native software, with Docker at the center of most container-based innovations.
