3 big goals for 2020

LoopBack is a Node.js and TypeScript framework that you can use to build APIs and microservices. IBMers are active maintainers of the LoopBack project, which integrates with our API Connect product offering. In this blog post, we look back at a few highlights from 2019 and talk about what we have planned for 2020—and how you can get involved!

A quick rewind on LoopBack

To understand where we’re going in 2020, let’s take a quick look back at 2019. Not only did we earn the 2019 API Award for the “Best in API Middleware” category, but we made great strides in developing and promoting LoopBack 4.

Highlights from the year included:

  • Substantial growth in GitHub activity and downloads
  • Winning the 2019 API Award for API Middeleware
  • Enhanced features and previews on LoopBack 4, including adding support for authentications and authorization, architectural improvements, cloud-native capabilities, migration guides, core module enhancements, and more
  • Increased transparency with milestone updates

We supported all of this with a new, fancy website, more in-depth tutorial content, and lots of events and community outreach.

Goals for 2020

In 2020, we have three major goals to make the LoopBack project more accessible and promote a greater adoption of the project.

  1. Make it easy to migrate from LoopBack 3 to LoopBack 4

Through detailed migration guides and robust migration tooling, we hope to make the path from LoopBack 3 to LoopBack 4 easy for our users—and to retain them through that migration process. Additional plans to narrow feature parity gaps and tighten our integration with IBM API Connect are also part of this migration work.

  2. Adopt new technology to enhance LoopBack

In addition to enhancing our core code base, we’re always looking at other technologies that are changing the tech industry and making plans for how we can use or integrate them with LoopBack.

  3. Increase community contributions

Open source thrives on a diverse community of contributors. As our LoopBack user base grows, we’d love to turn some of our users into contributors so that we can benefit from a larger, more diverse ecosystem.
