Expanding our 20-year partnership to amplify the role of developers and open source

This is an exciting day for IBM, for Red Hat, for my colleagues throughout the developer community and for me personally. Rooted in a mutual passion for open technology, IBM and Red Hat are expanding their 20-year partnership to amplify the value of open source and the role developers play in this ecosystem.

From Linux to Kubernetes, Red Hat is a leader in open source. By collaborating with technical leaders, open source advocates, developers and partners, Red Hat has made Red Hat Enterprise Linux a leading open source platform for business.

IBM’s commitment to open source is similarly longstanding, dating back to before our original investment in Linux two decades ago. We have over 68,000 open source-certified IBMers who contribute to our open ecosystem, develop and commit code to open projects, and serve as executive leaders in open communities.

How will we work together in open source? Red Hat joins IBM as a distinct unit. Red Hat’s culture, neutrality, and ecosystem are essential to open development and governance and we’re embracing those practices. Our work in communities with Red Hat has always been strong. This will not change and, going forward, we will continue with a common interest in advancing open, cloud-native development. (Please read this blog post from Chris Wright, CTO, Red Hat.)

Along with Red Hat, IBM remains an active contributor to key open source projects such as Kubernetes, Istio, Knative, Kubeflow, Java, and Jakarta EE. (Please read this blog post from Brad Micklea, Sr. Director, Developer Group, Red Hat.)

Quite simply, open source is in our collective DNA. Our expertise is extensive. IBM and Red Hat are among the largest contributors of code to open source projects. And, as core developers and maintainers of some of the most popular projects in the world, we are innovators when it comes to providing offerings that use open source technologies.

We celebrate today and look ahead with excitement. My colleagues and I are eager to bring the breadth of IBM’s resources and scale to Red Hat, strengthen our communities, and create the next chapter of open innovation.
