Stay involved with Call for Code
The 2022 Call for Code Global Challenge is now open, but open source projects always need your contribution
Once again, the Call for Code community has answered the call. We are so grateful to everyone who helped support the 2021 Global Challenge to address climate change and to all of you who participated in last year’s competition. The societal challenges brought on by climate change continue to be some of the most pressing issues of our time. The Call for Code team extends our sincere appreciation to all of you who have joined the fight and are helping apply technology solutions to make a lasting difference.
The 2022 Call for Code Global Challenge is now open! Use your skills to take on sustainability issues, from improving supply chains to developing clean energy solutions and protection of biodiversity. You have a chance to win $200,000 USD and receive support to see your solution deployed. Learn more.
Beyond the annual Global Challenge, Call for Code has open source projects hosted by the Linux Foundation that need your contribution year-round. Developers and non-technical contributors can help with open source projects designed to tackle specific local or global societal issues:
New to open source projects? Our new “Call for Code: Introduction to Open Source” online course is available at no cost and introduces you to key concepts, tools, and processes that you need to contribute to any open source project. Start learning, and earn a badge by completing this course.
Call for Code for Racial Justice open source projects seek to combat systemic racism through technology. Solution starters on the topics of Police & Judicial Reform and Accountability, Diverse Representation, and Policy & Legislation Reform include resources to help you learn about the projects and how you can start building, evolving, and leveraging the technology. Your contributions to these projects directly benefit organizations doing grassroots work and local communities who need these solutions. Join the Call for Code for Racial Justice community in Slack to gain access to experts and collaborators, and get started supporting these initiatives.
Successful Call for Code Global Challenge submissions are deployed in the real world and progress to become open sourced through our partnership with the Linux Foundation. One example is the open source project Pyrrha, which grew out of the Prometeo team’s 2019 Global Challenge winning solution and aims to accelerate innovation around firefighter health monitoring and safety. The Pyrrha project community welcomes new contributors who can help with things like improving toxin exposure analysis, improving mobile device capabilities, or deploying the software in new environments around the world. You can explore this and several other Call for Code open source projects designed to address pressing issues like climate change, natural disasters, and COVID-19, and join the community to learn how you can contribute.
