The CICS provisioning toolkit is now GA as the z/OS Provisioning Toolkit with support for dynamically provisioning both CICS and MQ applications. The toolkit is fully supported and available to all z/OS V2 clients at no additional charge. Please see Provisioning a CICS & Liberty development environment in minutes with the z/OS Provisioning Toolkit for more details.

The CICS provisioning toolkit cicspt is a utility that enables the rapid provisioning and de-provisioning of CICS environments using a simple command-line interface. The utility uses z/OSMF workflows to manage the lifecycle of CICS. The cicspt run command will provision and start CICS with embedded z/OS Connect EE. The accompanying cicspt rm command will shut down CICS and de-provision the environment.

Although released as part of the CICS TS V5.4 open beta cicspt works with CICS TS V5.2 and later. It requires z/OS 2.1 or higher and z/OSMF to be installed and configured. The download package includes a readme with installation instructions and a PDF with documentation. The PAX file contains everything you need to get started including workflows, properties files for configuring the utility to your installation, and the cicspt utility itself.

Once installed, running cicspt without a command gives you some simple help.Screen Shot 2016-07-15 at 16.50.57

The cicspt run command takes four arguments: the APPLID for the CICS region, a CMCI port, an HTTP port, and HTTPS port. The first port allows you to connect CICS Explorer. The other ports are used to connect to Liberty and z/OS Connect EE.Screen Shot 2016-07-15 at 17.04.25

You can now configure CICS Explorer to manage the regionAdd CMCI Connection

or open a URL to z/OS Connect EE and find out what services are installed.zosConnect

If you don’t have z/OS Connect EE don’t worry. There are instructions in the PDF on how to start a CICS region with a Liberty JVM server, without the z/OS Connect EE feature.

When you have finished with the CICS environment you can simply use the cicspt rm command to shutdown CICS and tidy up.Screen Shot 2016-07-15 at 17.04.55

It’s that easy! Please go to the download page to try the CICS provisioning toolkit for yourself. If you have any questions please see How do I give feedback on the CICS TS open beta? in the CICS space on dW Answers making sure to add the cicspt tag.
