In-place upgrades for applications like Istio running on Kubernetes have always been a challenge. There is often some down time, and with Kubernetes rolling upgrades, it is not possible to verify services are operating according to the design specifications of the services until you completely transition the services.
In this video, Steve Dake shows how Istio’s revisions upgrade technology solves this challenge, using a canary upgrade approach. The canary upgrade approach permits multiple Istio control planes running in the same Kubernetes cluster with some services managed by one control plane and other services managed by a different control plane. The control plane approaches immutability with this model.
