Deployments without downtime: High availability in the DevOps Services Web IDE

With cloud-based applications, there is always pressure to deliver faster. Development teams face technology pressure to quickly respond to security problems, web browser changes, and other technology dependencies. At the same time there is business pressure to deliver fixes to customers more quickly, and to provide early exposure to new features to gather critical feedback. The downside is that deployments often mean disruption and downtime for customers. In response to these pressures, the IBM Bluemix DevOps Services team is making deep architectural and technology changes within its applications to enable zero-downtime deployments. Read more

Share your code with the new Deploy to Bluemix button

Do you have sample applications built for IBM® Bluemix™ that you want to share with others? Sharing is now a whole lot easier with the introduction of the Deploy to Bluemix button. This button can be embedded in any readme, blog, article, or webpage and link to a publicly visible Git repository (e.g. from Bluemix DevOps Services, GitHub or elsewhere). It makes your readers immediately productive by providing a single action that will deploy a copy of your application in their own Bluemix account. Whereas in the past, you had to explain step-by-step to users how to clone a Git repo, set up build tools, and provide the Cloud Foundry script to push it to Bluemix, the Deploy to Bluemix button now makes that experience seamless and automated. Everything AND the kitchen sync: Bluemix Live Sync is here!

Do you find yourself trying to iterate on your app in the cloud? If so, this scenario is probably very familiar to you: You make a small code change, then wait patiently for a full redeploy of your app so that you can test it. This workflow works great in a local development environment, with tooling like incremental build and hot code swap… But thus far, it has been difficult to make this workflow fast and efficient using a cloud runtime as your execution environment.

Well, what if you could develop applications running on Bluemix as if you were in a local environment? What if, the minute you press save in your text editor of choice, your code automatically syncs with your Web IDE workspace and incrementally deploys to your running Bluemix app instance, enabling a wonderfully efficient code-test cycle? Bluemix Live Sync lets you do just that! Read more
