Girls Who Code
Madison, Michelle and Karen from Girls Who Code with Ginni Rometty

Hi guys! Today marks the completion of our third week here at IBM, which means we’re exactly halfway through our internship! It seems like only yesterday that we were onstage with CEO Ginni Rometty at IBM InterConnect when she offered us summer internships with IBM. We’ve learned so many new things and met so many new people along the way, so here are each of our takes on our experience so far.

As you remember, our ecstatic Day 1!
As you remember, our ecstatic Day 1!

Karen: I think the number one reason why these past three weeks have been so phenomenal for me is because of IBM’s vibe. People here genuinely care about what I have to say (and I’m only an intern!), so in addition to learning about chatbots and TJBots and IoT and all of the awesomeness that is Watson, I’ve also been learning a lot about effective communication and being confident enough to speak out my thoughts. As crazy as it sounds, I feel like I’ve matured a lot since my first day here! I’m so blessed to be able to live out my dream job this summer, and I hope this was just a six-week window of what my life will actually look like in the future.

Karen, Michelle and Madison – Slightly sadder because we’re already halfway through :-((

Michelle: I’m so thankful I get to be here at IBM Watson West, exploring the nooks and crannies of cognitive and data science at such a beautiful space. IBM is such a diverse company, people and profession-wise; I think I can see myself doing something like this in the future! This internship is just a few weeks of our entire lives, but I’ve learned and created wonderful things here. Sometimes I wonder if we’re just developing the projects or if the projects are developing us, too. No matter what happens, I’m just living in the moment and appreciating my summer. I hope you’ll come along with us through the next half of our summer journey, and I’ll see you on the other side!

Madison: What I have really enjoyed so far about IBM is the opportunity to learn from all of the amazing IBMers and gain insights about their fields of expertise. As a high school student, it has been so fascinating to learn more about developing, coding, marketing, sales, etc. because I have not had a lot of first-hand exposure to these fields before and I find it very thought-provoking to experience the challenges of each job. I have also really enjoyed our executive round-table discussions because it’s not every day you are able to sit down with an IBM executive for one hour and are able to talk with them about anything and everything! It has been so valuable to not only get their advice on careers and networking, but on what they have learned through their own careers and what they think we should keep in mind as we start our own professional lives. I can’t believe how fast time has gone by and I’m so looking forward to these last few weeks at IBM!

And that’s how we’re feeling at this milestone! It’s been a wonderful 3 weeks, but we still have lots to do. Thank you to everyone who has been sharing and commenting on our blog ❤️ We hope you’ll continue to support us throughout the rest of our summer!

With loads of love,
Karen, Michelle, and Madison
