The Digital Business Group internship is designed to give high school/pre-college students the opportunity to develop the skills, experiences, and networks that are critical to launching a career in the STEM field. For the first two weeks, We were held responsible for designing, building and testing a variety of projects that support IBM’s cloud and cognitive developer outreach activities in the U.S. A total of 7 different projects were given to us which includes: IBM Code Social Outreach, IBM Code Video Marketing Project, IBM Code Blog, IBM Code Influencer Identification, IBM Code Content, IBM Code Local Language, and IBM Code Newsletter Development. We focused on Social Outreach and Video Marketing mostly for these first two weeks as well.
Spotswood’s RTP Summer Intern Experience
The interns have focused hard on the newsletter project this week and were recently introduced to a newsletter project under another project mentor and lead, Virginie. We will, as mentioned before, take responsibility for the content gathering, coding, publishing, and reporting for newsletters that publish on an almost, daily basis. This work will also coincide with our social outreach project and publishing of tweets promoting the different newsletters that each of us have focused on. With Virginie’s help, we will help build and increase a newsletter subscription by proposing a promotion plan that will be tested on one of the external newsletters and applied to others, once the promotional tactic is tested. For this reason, helping with day to day outreach requests are impactful and necessary.
One of the best tactics to utilize for this promotion plan is email marketing. We can use email marketing as a tactic to increase content awareness and traffic to the developerWorks and IBM Code websites. There are still other methods that are just as effective as email marketing, along with our promotional plans. Using other methods within the marketing mix to build quality email lists as an asset for future communication is important as well.
To reiterate the outcome that I and the other interns hope to achieve goes as follows:
- Learn how to use a content editor and marketing automation system with Virginie.
- Gain experience with digital marketing in general.
- Learn how to promote assets to increase subscription levels.
- Understand the nuances of content display.
- Get an introduction to email marketing as a tactic and get familiar with its terminology and/or vocabulary.
- Learn how to report on data and how to use that data to achieve a better performance of email tactics moving forward.
Overall, we will analyze our marketing automation platform instance and dashboard and propose a clean-up exercise to make the current layout more user friendly. In other words, we will be looking at our tool’s organization structure and proposing a better way to structure our dashboard and instance for ease of use. Although the interns have a lot on their plate for the last weeks of the summer internship, the internship has still been exciting and challenging!
Jack’s RTP Summer Intern Experience
Towards the beginning of the internship we were assigned a video project in which we had to use the IBM Code website. On the website, we had to pick a code pattern that involved one of our three topics. From there, we went ahead and set up meeting with the authors of these code patterns to gain more info on why he put the pattern together and how to appeal it towards developers. My pattern was “Build a Blockchain enabled health and fitness app with Android and Kubernetes” which involved using blockchain to help reward people for doing fitness related goals. The author, Anthony Amanse was very helpful in making me see how to appeal it towards developers. However, one thing still stumped me: the personas.
These personas were the different kinds of people developers could be and they were named Evan and Todd. Evan would be a new developer who would be more willing to try something even if it died out in a couple of years. On the other hand there’s Todd, a more well-seasoned developer who rather stick with what he/she is good at than do something new. We have to appeal to both in order to do well on this project. Calvin, our project lead set up a meeting with the person who helped define these two personalities, Kevin Hicks. He helped us to distinguish between the two and helped us to better understand how to appeal to both personas in our video. I can’t wait to finish this project and how well it does.
Aathira’s RTP Summer Intern Experience
So many super, cool things have happened this week! I actually go to volunteer for another IBM Girls Camp! There were around 20 girls, but the difference was that these were children of IBM employees here in RTP. I taught each of the girls how to create hand lotion and helped them follow the instructions correctly. They were mostly either in middle school or were going into middle school, but they were all super, energetic girls who had a lot to say. I got to talk to all of them and it was a really fun experience for me!
Project-wise, we are all working hard to continue moving along with everything that we have been assigned to. For the video project, I have been trying to get into contact with the authors of the code pattern that I selected. Fortunately, one of them was able to join me and my project lead, Calvin in a quick meeting answering some of my questions. He gave me great ideas on what to include in my marketing video! He gave me more information on what my code pattern really was and why it is important. And he also gave me reasons as to why developers would be interested in such a technology. The main goal of our video is to promote our code pattern, but at the same time make it appeal to developers by using significant reasons that would make them interested in learning more about it!
As a part of AOIT at my school, to receive extra credit for our internship grade, one of the requirements is to conduct three interviews, one of them being our mentor! So I decided to interview Dianne who was totally willing to help me with this! I asked her a multitude of questions about her career choice and her background. It was really fun getting to know more about Dianne and her interests! She also gave me a lot of tips for the future and how changing careers every so often is perfectly normal! She reminded me that I still have a lot of time to explore and really discover what it is that I want to pursue! I have learned that if I am not enjoying what I am doing, then that is a cue for me to consider changing career choices as you should always enjoy what you do!
Overall, all of our projects and assignments have been going really well and we are continuously getting great opportunities to make the most of our internship here at IBM!
