IBM BigInsights 3.0 supports integration with MicroStrategy v9.4.1 for Business Intelligence reporting.

Prerequisites

  • Existing installation of MicroStrategy v9.4.1
  • Existing installation of BigInsights
  • Existing installation of SQL Server (which shall be used as metadata repository)

See the BigInsights and MicroStrategy installation documentation to install these products.

How to integrate these two products:

Configure MicroStrategy for metadata

Step 1: Create a DSN

Under All Programs -> MicroStrategy -> Configuration Wizard, select the first option Create Metadata, History List and Statistics Repository Tables.

Click on Next.

Select the first option Metadata Tables then click Next.

For an existing DSN, please select the appropriate entry. You can create a new entry by clicking New.

In the current example, metadata is stored in the SQL Server. Select Other Relational Databases.

Choose SQL Server Native Client 11.0, and click Next.

Complete the SQL Server details and click Next.

Select the authentication option for SQL Server and click Next.

Complete the fields for the default database to point the metadata repository from the list then click on Next.

Click on Finish.

Click Test Data Source to verify the DSN connectivity.

The DSN for the metadata created successfully.

Step 2: Configure MicroStrategy Intelligent Server

Under All Programs -> MicroStrategy ->  Configuration Wizard, select Configure Intelligence Server.

Select the DSN you configured in step 1, above.

Enter the User Name and Password.

Enter the Intelligence Server details.

Click Next.

Enter the Project Source Name. Click Next.

Step 3: Configure BigInsights as data repository

Go to All Programs -> MicroStrategy -> Desktop -> Desktop.

Click OK.

Navigate to the created project (MSTR_BIGSQL_DEMO) ->Administration -> Configuration Managers -> Database instances (Right-click and click New -> Database Instance):

Specify the connection type as IBM InfoSphere BigInsights3.x. Select the Database instance name as the Database defined IBM BigInsights Big SQL.

Click New.

Select DSN associated with IBM BI Big SQL. Click New.

Specify the Login ID and Password associated with Big SQL DSN.

Click OK.

Follow the standard procedure for MicroStrategy report creation using Big SQL connectivity. The Big SQL connection will ensure the BigInsights HADOOP data is leveraged in the report creation.
