IndiaHacks powered by IBM is the biggest confluence of developers across domains and interests under a single platform. It is a platform that enables hackers to make a difference. Mr. Krishna Chaitanya and I were presenters at the recent IndiaHacks held in Bangalore. We planned our presentation as follows: Bluemix runtimes, Data Science and IOT by Krishna and Watson APIs, Cloudant and dashDB by me. There were also other keynote speakers from RBS and Honeywell.

Our presentation received a lot of appreciation from the participants. Many showed interest in learning more about Bluemix services and its applications.

Post the presentations, the hackathon commenced at 2 pm. Forty-six teams participated, of which 13 used IBM Bluemix. We spoke to the others to try and understand why they did not use Bluemix. The reasons they gave included:

  • Blockchain does not support the latest Hyperledger version 1.0
  • They need to pick up the Go language for using blockchain
  • Some were not aware of Bluemix Services

Furthermore, we decided to educate the participants about the various services of Bluemix which they can use for their hackathon, and we also answered their queries about the various categories of Bluemix.

One of the major concerns raised by the participants was that the hackathon is spanning more than 3 months and their Bluemix accounts are trial accounts with only 30-days validity. The participants mentioned that they would be unable to demonstrate their work as their trial accounts would soon expire. They requested for extension of the validity of their accounts. This was immediately addressed by one of our team members and the concerned IBM team ensured to arrange coupon codes to extend validity.

The Bluemix services widely used by the participants in the hackathon include:

  • Watson Conversation Service
  • Discovery
  • Tone Analyzer
  • Virtual agent
  • Text to Speech
  • Services in IOT
  • Blockchain

We did succeed in helping other participants develop their programs on Bluemix and in turn help the developer community. Thus, day 1 ended on a fulfilling note.
