Merxius

Hello, please walk us through your entrepreneurial journey and background before you started? Any interesting stories.

Merxius was started by Vaishali and Hasan who came together for a Facebook app for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The app went viral and gave us the confidence to build something on our own. On a visit to the Golconda Fort, we wondered if it was possible to see the Fort in its original glory. Instead of the dilapidated walls, could we see it in its original glory? Could we visualize how people looked and lived like in its heyday? Thus began the search for a technolo- gy that could make this vision come true which lead us to Augmented Reality and subsequently to Virtual Reality.

Tell us something about founding team?

Vaishali leads the business side of the company and has certifications from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and the Indian School of Business. She was also mentored by Dina Powell, then President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation. Hasan leads technical side of the company and has been coding since the age of 12. He has a large portfolio to his name including bots, algorithms, frameworks and even a highly opinionated blog.

Tell us little about your product/ platform

RED is Merxius’ flagship product and is a Virtual Reality creation software. Using existing 3D models, any body can start creating immersive Virtual Reality experiences in just a few clicks. RED enables the creation of visualization, interaction, training and audit experiences in VR. With a simple drag-and-drop interface and no coding, #AnyBodyCanVR! RED’s powerful collaborative feature means that multiple users can join the same virtual space and interact among themselves.

Tell us about your customer traction

RED is being trialed or used by a wide range of customers including the Indian Army, and large players from the automotive, aerospace and real estate.

How has your association with IBM helped you differentiate and grow?

The recognition we received at the IBM Smart- Camp catapulted us into the limelight. It opened doors to potential customers and partners. Our engagement with the GEP team has resulted in connects which we hope to capitalize on.

What has been your experience using the IBM Bluemix Cloud platform

The Bluemix Cloud platform really is the ultimate cloud solution. From bare metal servers to readymade appliances, it makes working with the cloud a breeze. As we develop the product, the ability to draw on computing resources on demand has been of great help.

What role does a strong technology platform play in your product/solution and how has it helped you differentiate?

The Watson Cloud offering abstracts immense complexity and exposes it in a way that even non-techies can use. (This philosophy is also mirrored in our product RED which allows non-techies in creating immersive, engaging VR experienc- es easily). The Watson APIs allow us to run quick experiments and play around with complex functionality – AI, image recognition etc – without getting bogged down by algorithms and implementations.

What is your road ahead for your start-up?

The future is bright for Augmented and Virtual Reality. With new headsets being launched every day, adoption is growing rapidly. We want RED to be the defacto standard for Xtended Reality creation. Imagine the day a teacher wants to explain how the solar system works – she opens RED, loads a 3D model, clicks a few buttons and an entire class- room can travel through space with her! That is the kind of vision we want to bring to life.
