Please walk us through your entrepreneurial journey and background before you started? Any interesting stories?

The interest of Harpreet Singh, a biomedical engineer with two advanced degrees in biomedical science from the University of Wisconsin, and Ravneet Kaur, Masters in Computers stems into this domain from their personal experience. They lost one of their twins as babies were preterm, born in 26 weeks instead of normal 34-38 weeks. One of the children survived. The doctor said that the deceased infant — barely bigger than the palm of an adult — had succumbed to sepsis. Since then they joined hands with Dr. Raghuram Mallaiah of Fortis La Femme Hospital in Delhi to build a solution that can enhance child healthcare through digitization. This lead them to found the iNICU Medical Pt. Ltd., a niche company focusing on providing sophisticated tech solutions in child healthcare.

Harpreet Singh – Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Cofounder – PhD AcSIR (Dr. Samir K Brahmachari), MS BME University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA, BE BIT Mesra. 17 years of Industry in USA, Europe and India. Past experience includes management and engineering roles at Intuit, BT Exact, Philips Medical, HCL and McKinsey.

Dr. Raghuram Mallaiah – Cofounder – Head & Director of Neonatology department in Fortis La Femme. A neonatologist trained at the Hammersmith Hospital – London, is a full time consultant at Fortis La Femme. Graduated from the Bangalore Medical College, India in 1993 and did his MRCP Paediatrics (London, UK). He has been a Fellow in Neonatology Hammersmith Hospital Imperial College London, UK, Fellow in PICU, Newcastle General Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary (Tertiary referral unit for Northern UK and ECMO unit), North Tees General Hospital, Stockton on Tees and SHO in Neonatology, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter. Dr. Gautam Yadav – (Cofounder) – Head of Paediatrics & Neonatology department at Kalawati Hospital, Rewari. He has competed his MBBS from Sion Hospital, Mumbai, DCH from Bangalore Medical College and his DNB from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. His areas of interest include neonatal intensive care and hospital management.

Ravneet Kaur – Cofounder – Master’s degree in Computer Engineering from Gurunanak Dev University. She has handled several Software positions across Design, Development and QA related fields in USA and India. Prof. Samir K Brahmachari – Advisor – An Indian biophysicist and former Director General of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Former Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. He is the Founder Director of Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), New Delhi and the Chief Mentor of Open Source for Drug Discovery (OSDD) Project. He is the recipient of J.C Bose Fellowship Award, DST (2012).

Tell us little about your product/ platform

Through our current products offering, Integrated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (iNICU) and Integrated Child Health Record (iCHR) we have created a comprehensive solution taking care of the child right from birth till he/she reaches adolescence. iNICU is complete automation of NICU workflow to enable timely intervention for premature and ill neonates to enhance quality care. iCHR a revolutionary concept of completely automating child’s vaccination record and crucial growth parameters to monitor their real-time development profile. By leveraging IOT and Big Data technologies, the complete solution enables the ‘CARE People’ to focus on care and not on paper. iNICU – A one stop workflow solution to assimilate and disseminate neonate information by connecting the generated source data from various devices. The application is designed to cater to all the responsibilities of various roles/owners (Nurse, Resident Doctor, Senior Doctor, Paediatrician and Administrator). It’s an effort to virtually eliminate human error in neonate health monitoring. Post discharge iNICU data extends into iCHR application. which is India’s 1st Hospital linked engagement platform. iCHR – India’s 1st Hospital linked platform which automates growth monitoring, prescription, lab investigations, vaccination record and scheduler for the child. It provides the web portal for doctors and mobile application for parents, which enhances doctor-parent engagement. The adaptability of the solution allows it to be implemented across hospitals and clinics with minimal infrastructure investment. The combined solution package of iNICU and iCHR caters to both preterm & term babies from birth to adolescent age. iCHR and iNICU applications have been successfully implemented in NCR region in major hospitals and clinics. Solution brings live data monitoring from anytime-anywhere, auto discharge summary, prediction of onset of infections and doctor-parent engagement platform.

This can be seen from number of institutions like Fortis La Femme, Jaypee hospital, Kalwati hospital, SCI hospital, Paras Bliss hospital and many top-notch clinics in Delhi NCR already on board with many others institutions in regions like Karnataka, Gujarat, Jaipur, Chandigarh are in pipeline to deliver this service to parents. iNICU leveraging on the market developed by iCHR is already fetching interest from market even when the product is in pilot stage. This levitate the credibility and need of the solution in market. iNICU is also offering dynamic pricing on per bed per day usage to suit the hospital needs.

How has been your association with IBM Global Entrepreneur Program (GEP)? How important do you think IBM GEP is to help and improve the ecosystem?

“Association with IBM GEP is providing us wider industry exposure. In last few months, the visibility of Oxyent in industry has been remarkably increased by IBM with publishing our story of success in various media releases such as Business World, CNBC, Economic Times, etc. Also new market opportunities are getting created daily for us by participating in various IBM events and tapping into its well established and connected network.”

The Smart Camp, India onward and various other internal & external events organized by the IBM Global Entrepreneur program provided us a platform to interact with top investors, industry experts and healthcare domain mentors in India. The valuable insights on improving our offering and scale up techniques received from the mentors will makes us more viable for future investments. We also had discussions with relevant people in the Healthcare for synergies.

What’s your take on the IBM Bluemix, which has IaaS (earlier Softlayer ) and PaaS offering ? How is it helping your start-up grow?

“Being the winners of IBM Smart Camp for Health Tech, IBM provided us free access to world class proven IaaS via Softlayer and best practices of PaaS in Bluemix for one year. Already, we have successfully deployed our solutions for more than 20 clients on Softlayer cloud infrastructure. Also utilizing IBM solution to host our development and demonstration environments. “

IBM is also providing us technical mentoring for best practices and effective usage of their cloud solutions. The solution has been providing us smooth access to our Web Application. Also the mobile app linked Softlayer application is fruitful for cloud maintenance and services. We have integrated Bluemix API into our solution to efficiently fetch live clinical vital parameters of a baby in a NICU and securely push it to a remote dataset for analysis. As a start-up getting technical mentoring from IBM mentors in utilizing best practices in IoT and building on knowledge base of Watson will provide us an opportunity to be a world-class solution provider in child healthcare.

What is your road ahead for your start-up?

Currently Oxyent is aggressively working in Delhi NCR and now looking for expansion in other major geographies like Bangalore, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad as its witnessing huge demand from these areas. Even various state governments are showcasing interest to implement this solution in their respective government hospitals. In future Oxyent is also eyeing International markets like Eastern Europe and Dubai since this kind of advanced solution in child healthcare is unprecedented even in international scenario.
