IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS Version 8 now available!

The latest release of IBM SDK for Node.js – z/OS brings many significant improvements to the z/OS JavaScript community, including increased performance, security and best of all with a zero license charge!

V8 highlights include:

  • Updated npm 6.4.1 (Node.js package manager), which includes standardized lockfiles for cross-package-manager compatibility and automatic saving of newly installed packages without explicitly adding the –save flag
  • N-API provides an ABI-stable abstraction over native JavaScript APIs, ensuring smooth migration of native add-ons modules across Node.js major releases
  • Previously the C++ compiler included with Node.js – z/OS could only compile C++ add-ons in EBCDIC format. New in version 8, you can now compile ASCII format which is the most popular format for external npm modules
  • The experimental async/await, which is a modern approach that allows you to write asynchronous code that looks like synchronous code
  • In Node v8, the buffer module is initialized to zeros providing better security against potential vulnerabilities
    Why Node.js?
Simplicity: JavaScript is simple, powerful & lightweight with support for full stack development. Node.js encourages agile practices with modular development and an ecosystem of over one million npm packages. It requires less written code, therefore fewer bugs, more streamlined testing and quicker delivery of Node.js applications.

    Why Node.js on Z?
