Virtual machine health shows OK even if a boot volume is deleted outside PowerVC

Virtual machine health shows OK even if its boot volume is deleted from the storage volume controller outside IBM® Power® Virtualization Center.

Problem

If a boot volume for a virtual machine is deleted from the storage volume controller in an out-of-band operation, the virtual machine health does not show a warning in PowerVC. The virtual machine health shows OK and PowerVC continues to allow all operations that are running on the virtual machine.

Explanation

PowerVC does not monitor the lifecycle of all disks at the storage back end. If a boot volume for a virtual machine is missing or is deleted from the storage volume controller, PowerVC does not detect it. Since PowerVC does not detect the missing boot volume, the health of the virtual machine continues to show OK .

Resolution

To resolve the missing boot volume problem and to ensure correct functioning of the virtual machine, you must delete this virtual machine from PowerVC. After you delete it, create a new virtual machine to carry out all the required operations.
