IBM Senior Technical Staff Member Phil Estes explains what it means now that Docker’s containerd Project has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). CNCF is committed to advancing the development of cloud native technology and services by creating a new set of common container technologies informed by technical merit and end-user value, and inspired by Internet-scale computing.

containerd (pronounced container D) is an industry-standard core container runtime with an emphasis on simplicity, robustness, and portability. It is available as a daemon for Linux and Windows, which can manage the complete container lifecycle of its host system. Based on the Docker Engine’s core container runtime, it is designed to be embedded into a larger system rather than being used directly by developers or end-users.
