COBOL as a foundational element
Mainframe Systems Programmer Torrie McLaughlin likes to think of COBOL as a key asset to her professional toolkit. Torrie started down the path to becoming a librarian after a stint in the military and one of the requirements was to get some programming experience and so her boss chose a class in COBOL for non-coder Torrie. From there, her learning spiralled. But the choice of COBOL provided a crucial foundation for learning all the newer languages people use to create applications that will connect with the mainframe. When asked about big iron and the cloud, she replied:
“The mainframe IS the fastest cloud on the planet.”

Exploring z/OS Functions
Z Function Tester Andrew Hicks helps people take on a task so enormous that many would give up before they started – how to handle more data combinations than the number of seconds since the Big Bang (about 1.0e84; the number of seconds since the start of the universe is about 1.0e-43). Andrew and team member Ryan Rawlins are working on a test that uses pairwise combinatorials to handle this massive number of potential combinations.
